Saturday AM Songwriters w/ Charlie McCurry & Doug Baker

October is upon us, so it's time for another Saturday AM Songwriters at Common Grounds. This month, Doug Baker's guest will be Charlie McCurry, originally from the neighborhood and now living in Fancy Gap, Virginia.
Charlie McCurry began playing guitar nearly 60 years ago, teaching himself to play. He began writing songs in 1968. In the Summer of 2008, Charlie’s song, “It's Only Rain," won The National Guitar Workshop's Songwriting Contest during its inaugural Songwriting Summit in Nashville. The Summit was held at the Blair School of Music at Vanderbilt University. Participants performed at “The Bluebird Cafe.” In the fall of 2014, Charlie produced two albums in Nashville; It’s Only Rain and Little Child. In 2017, he added a third, titled The Divorce Album.

Doug Baker has been a fixture in the Greensboro music scene since 1978. A versatile artist, Baker has played everything from power-pop to free improv to honky tonk. In 2021, he released his debut solo album, Navigating Life, which Eddie Huffman, author of of “John Prine: In Spite of Himself,” praised for its musical range and "quirky, lighthearted touch reminiscent of John Prine and Loudon Wainwright III." Beyond his own work as a performer and songwriter, Baker is dedicated to music education, offering lessons in guitar, ukulele, and songwriting at The Music Academy of North Carolina, and hosting the popular local series, Songwriters@Scup.
