Nobody Puts Baby in the Corner! Public Dance Event
Ever feel like you just need a chance to dance the week/month/year off? Miss out on prom because of Covid? Didn’t get the chance to show off your sassy partner at public events? This 80’s themed dance will have a DJ, photo spot, and all the fun we can fit into the Hyers space!
Our Residency project focuses on the expectations put on individuals to bend, mask, and otherwise fit inside the capitalistic society that our culture has deemed “normal.” This event is intended to provide a safe space for people to congregate, celebrate diversity, and UNmask. Want to wear your best Madonna hair, fellas? Bring it! Want to go full-on “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun” in your favorite multicolored skirt? Feeling the Ducky vibe? Come dance the night away with others who celebrate you for you!
This event is free and open to high school students and adults.
This event is presented in conjunction with little independent theatre and little independent artist in their Residency at the Hyers with Creative Greensboro.
The little independent artists (LIA) Residency at the Hyers, in collaboration with little independent theatre (LIT) and Creative Greensboro, is focused on exploring the ways we perceive each other, and how we mask to fit into our communities. The project examines societal norms through the exploration of masks, labels, and stereotypes. We encourage the audience to ask questions about their own culpability. What does complacency look like? How can we be our best selves when we feel tied to the labels we’ve been assigned? Can we shed those labels and redefine ourselves? Using Improv, movement, and audience participation, the performances and public events entertain while considering these pivotal questions.
